ONGOING REHABILITATION, RE-ORIENTATION AND REINTEGRATION OF STREET CHILDREN IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE.
Nigeria has no fewer than 13 million street children according to a vanguard newspaper report on 1st February 2016. Akwa Ibom has one of the largest numbers. They are boys and girls between 7 and 22 years. They live in pitiable conditions, lack family cares and all basic needs of life, always facing inhuman and cruel treatment from the police and other dehumanizing forces. Some girls among them complain of incessant sexual abuse which exposes them to dangers of all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. The harshness of street life and quest for survival turn many of them into many vices.
Our program picks them up, gives them needed care, love and support, feeds them, works on them, prays with them. We try to get some of them back to school. We are working hard to train and establish some of them on a trade and skill such as tailoring, carbinet making, hairdressing, barbing and other vocational training and agriculture while working hard to reintegrate them into identified families. We urgently need to establish a temporary rehabilitation and refuge shelter for street children in Uyo for thorough work and public inclusion. We are going into advocacies via print and electronic media, workshops and seminars. for government attention. Your support and donations will help us to do more. One suffering homeless and abandoned child needs a dollar from you.
